From Fibres to Filters: How Glosfume Builds Ceramic Elements In-House

In hot gas filtration, the quality and performance of the ceramic filter element determine the overall reliability and effectiveness of the entire system. At Glosfume, we don’t leave this critical component to chance. Instead of relying on external suppliers, we design and manufacture our ceramic elements entirely in-house via our subsidiary Glosfume Technologies Ltd. This level of vertical integration enables us to maintain control over quality, performance, and availability—benefitting every customer, across every industry we serve.

Why In-House Manufacturing Matters

Third-party ceramic filter elements often introduce variability in pressure drop, structural strength, or availability. These inconsistencies are especially problematic in regulated, high-temperature environments, where consistent emissions performance is critical.

Glosfume’s in-house production eliminates those risks. From raw fibre to finished filter, we control every step, ensuring that the final product meets the demanding performance standards our systems are known for. By manufacturing locally in the UK, we also reduce lead times and respond more flexibly to project-specific needs.

Engineered Fibre Formulations

Our filter performance begins with material selection. We use specially engineered blends of ceramic and mineral fibres, selected for their ability to withstand thermal shock, acid gas exposure, and aggressive particulate matter. This includes low bio-persistent fibres for our S4 range, offering an environmentally safer option without compromising durability.

Each fibre formulation is tailored to the operating conditions of the system. The G3 element is suited to high-temperature applications up to 1100°C, while the G4 and S4 elements provide robust performance in mid-range temperatures and corrosive environments.

Precision Vacuum Forming

The forming process is computer-controlled to ensure consistency in shape, wall density, and porosity. Each filter element is typically 1000 mm long with a tapered outer diameter of 60 mm down to 55 mm. This optimised geometry ensures an ideal balance between filtration surface area, pressure drop, and cleaning efficiency.

Vacuum forming ensures structural integrity across every element, eliminating weak spots and ensuring even filtration performance. This process is one of the reasons Glosfume filters consistently deliver 99.99% particulate removal efficiency.

Drying, Sintering, and Finishing

After forming, each filter undergoes controlled drying followed by thermal sintering. This stage hardens the fibre structure and prepares the filter for high-temperature use. Surface treatments are then applied where necessary—for example, micro-porous coatings that improve sub-micron particle capture, especially in environments with significant PM10 and PM2.5 emissions.

These finishing steps result in a product that is not only mechanically robust but also chemically and thermally stable across a wide range of industrial conditions.

Testing and Quality Assurance

Glosfume implements a rigorous quality control regime. Every day, a representative sample—10% of all filters produced—is tested for strength, pressure drop, and dimensional accuracy. These results are logged and linked to a barcode that remains with each filter throughout its lifecycle.

Thanks to our traceability system, we can track each element back to its production batch, giving customers added confidence in regulatory environments such as nuclear fuel handling, waste incineration, or food industry by-product processing.

The G3, G4, and S4 Product Range

Our three primary filter element types are designed to suit a broad range of applications. The G3 element is used where extreme temperatures are encountered, such as in metal recovery and smelting. The G4 is suitable for biomass combustion and other medium-duty applications. The S4, based on LBPF media, combines high thermal resistance with enhanced occupational safety characteristics, making it the most versatile of the three.

All elements are fully compatible with Glosfume’s housings and reverse pulse systems, and each plays a vital role in achieving sub-3 mg/m³ emission levels—even in the most challenging processes.

Looking Ahead: Innovation in Filtration Media

We’re also exploring hybrid materials that combine filtration with scrubbing functionality, potentially reducing system complexity in dual-pollutant environments.

We are also prototyping shorter or custom-shaped filter elements for installations with limited space or specific flow requirements. Because we control the full manufacturing process, we can trial new configurations quickly and cost-effectively, ensuring that innovation is practical, not theoretical.
