Founded in 1988 Glosfume is the market leading manufacturer of hot gas ceramic filters
The company began its life as a producer of aluminum master alloys, originally trading as Gloster Metals Ltd. Operating a conventional bag filter to control emissions, the bag, as they tend to do, caught fire and resulted in three months of lost production.
During that period, Bob Roberts developed a new filter system using ceramic elements. The new solution was a complete success and enabled the company to transition to Glosfume as we are known today.
The history of Glosfume
For over three decades, we have developed and manufactured the best hot gas filtration systems. Glosfume continues to outperform competitors and exceed expectations both from an engineering perspective with our technology and as an organization.

Blackpole Metals Ltd
Bob formed the first company, Blackpole Metals Ltd, at the age of 22 and was appointed M.D. at the age of 25. He designed and built a process capable of fragmentizing car engines to separate and recover all base metals, recovering cast iron, steel, aluminum, zinc, brass, copper, and phosphorus bronze. The plant processed over 13,000 tons of scrap car engines per year, employing only five manual operators, including a sloping hearth furnace to convert recovered aluminum into LM24 (UK), 226 (German), and AC48 (Japanese) aluminum-specification ingots. The fragmentized engine blocks (low phosphorus) were the perfect alternative to expensive pig iron. He sold the company in 1978.
Gloster Metals Ltd
Gloster Metals Ltd was formed to manufacture aluminum master alloys, operating with an induction furnace. This created high levels of pollution when smelting pure granulated aluminum wire contaminated with a very small amount of plastic. A bag filter was installed to control emissions but caught fire after three months of use and stopped production for two months. In 1981, low-density ceramic elements were developed by BP. Gloster Metals used this media to design a filter capable of operating up to 600°C and withstanding local fires within the filter housing. In 1990, Gloster Metals was sold and shipped to Cyprus.

Kruger Brent Ltd
A subsidiary company, Kruger Brent Ltd, was set up to design and manufacture sloping-hearth and reverberatory furnaces for the smelting of secondary aluminum, with emissions controlled by ceramic filtration.
Glosfume is Founded
Glosfume Ltd is founded and quickly gains recognition in the industry. Leveraging Bob’s well-established networks, the company successfully sold its products to traditional competitors in the secondary aluminum foundry market. It was based at Ashleworth, Gloucestershire, renting an office next to a fabrication shop.
Breakthrough Moment
Glosfume’s breakthrough moment arrives when Redland Rooftiles became the first company outside the secondary aluminum market to purchase their filtration system. This significant milestone opens doors for the company to venture into the process industry, broadening its horizons and expanding its customer base.
In line with their expanding projects, Glosfume takes on the challenge of designing a filtration system for the MOD (Ministry of Defence) at Shoeburyness, specifically for incinerating out-of-date ammunition while ensuring minimal emissions.

Glosfume Moves to Worcester
As the business continued to flourish, the need for expansion became imminent. In the summer of 1994, Glosfume relocated from its Gloucestershire location to Worcester, providing ample space for growth and the ability to manufacture larger filter units. This move marked a new chapter in the company’s history and solidified its position as a leader in ceramic filtration.

Bespoke Vacuum Forming Plant
Glosfume experienced problems with bought-in ceramic media, namely strength issues and high virgin pressure drops. For this reason, we designed and built a bespoke vacuum-forming plant to manufacture a strong, stable ceramic element. The plant has the capacity to manufacture 100,000 elements per annum.

Inhouse Fabrication
Glosfume set up its first of three in-house fabrication shops. All components are laser cut to maintain accuracy of the filter head and element alignment. We now have two other approved fabricators supporting production.
Jon Luckett Appointed as Managing Director
Jon began working for Glosfume in 1995 and has been a key part in developing our reputation as a leading company in hot gas filtration. Jon immediately made his mark with the announcement of further expansion, allowing for a larger order book and throughput.

Awarded Best Ceramic Filtration Systems
Building on further success in September 2015 Glosfume was awarded “Best for Ceramic Filtration Systems, design, build and installation and innovation award in custom built filters”.

Today, Glosfume continues to push the boundaries of environmental filtration, delivering innovative solutions that ensure clean air and a sustainable future. With a rich history of overcoming challenges and pioneering breakthroughs, Glosfume remains at the forefront of the industry, dedicated to preserving our planet for generations to come. Our latest development is producing catalytic elements to remove NOx and dioxins. To date, we have over 1,500 worldwide installations controlling a wide range of industrial hot gas emissions, including precious metal product recovery.
